During the week of February 16th through 20th, 2009 the TMT Handbook consortium organised a training course, which was hosted by and held at the Belgian Nuclear Research Center (SCK•CEN) in Mol, Belgium.

A total of 43 people from 14 European countries (Belgium, Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Estonia, Finland, Germany, Hungary, Lithuania, Luxemburg, Norway, Poland, Romania, Sweden and the United Kingdom), participated in this course. As requested by the organisers, half of the attendees were medical trained professionals whereas the remaining were radiation protection specialists.

The course covered topics such as: emergency response arrangements, radiation detection and monitoring, medical treatment of casualties, public communication, and an exercise during which the participants had an opportunity to familiarise themselves with the contents of the Handbook. Dr. María Neira from the World Health Organization and Dr. Michel Hugon from the European Commission Directorate General for Research and scientific officer of the TMT handbook project assisted in the handling of participation certificates.

The overall appraisal of the first training course in the subject matter was very good and many countries expressed their desire to organise similar ones to continue with the synergy.

A word of appreciation to all lecturers and staff that contributed to a very successful meeting.
